Our website is here to provide you with Information, Tutorials and Resources about HDV (High Definition Video), the format, equipment, news and uses. You will find an expanding range of info and opinions on cameras, editing, shooting techniques and what is happening in the HDV world. It is early days for our site, but we hope that you will return in the future to keep abreast with developments. High Definition Video (HDV) is a video format designed to record compressed HDTV video onto standard DV or MiniDV video tapes. The transport stream for capturing to your editing system is Firewire compatible (IEEE 1394), and well within the capabilities of a reasonably modern home computer. HDV was designed to provide an upgrade path from standard definition (SD) to high definition (HD) video. Initially of interest to low-budget TV production companies, the cost of equipment has now fallen to a level that opens HDV to amateur videographers and home consumers. High Definition Television screens are common in the US and Japan, and are on the increase in Europe, widening the market for cameras that provide the necessary quality at relatively low cost. And compared to pro HD video equipment such as HDCAM and DVCPRO HD, HDV is VERY inexpensive.

Earlier this month Adam Wilt got his hands on a preview model of the Sony HVR-V1 HDV camcorder. Unfortunately we didn't get to see one, but it sounds as though this will be the HD replacement for the PD170. Smaller in size than the Z1, and with a feature or two missing, the camera has three CMOS chips and the option of 24 frame progressive scan. Adam compares the new V1 with a PD150 and the HVR-Z1.
